British High Commissioner Calls on Ghana’s Defence Minister

The British High Commissioner to Ghana, HE Harriet Thompson, together with the UK Defence Attaché to Ghana, Commander Richard Walters, paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Defence, Hon Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, at The Square. The visit served as an opportunity to congratulate the Minister on his appointment and to explore avenues for deepening bilateral security cooperation between Ghana and the United Kingdom.

Welcoming the delegation, Hon Dr Omane Boamah expressed appreciation for the visit and acknowledged the deep-rooted and longstanding ties between Ghana and the UK. He commended the steady progress made in strengthening bilateral relations and emphasised the need to further enhance cooperation particularly in the area of security to address growing threats in the Gulf of Guinea and the Sahel Region.

The Hon Minister also highlighted the increasing challenges posed by Ghana’s porous borders, noting the urgent need for modern surveillance technologies and advanced operational equipment to boost the effectiveness and response capacity of security personnel deployed along the country’s frontiers. He underscored the importance of UK support in strengthening Ghana’s border security and enhancing intelligence capabilities to counter regional instability.

HE Thompson reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to its enduring partnership with Ghana. She commended the close collaboration between the two nations and recognised Ghana’s proactive efforts in addressing internal and regional security threats. She assured the Minister of UK’s continued support, particularly in assisting the Ghana Armed Forces to mitigate risks along the northern borders and to enhance overall national resilience.
