The Minister for Defence, Hon Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, reaffirmed Ghana’s enduring and strategic relationship with the Arab Republic of Egypt, describing it as a resilient and mutually beneficial partnership. According to the Minister, despite the evolving global challenges, the strong historical ties and open communication between the two nations remain unshaken.
Dr Omane Boamah made these remarks during a courtesy visit by the Egyptian Ambassador to Ghana, HE A.M Youssef, at The Square. The Ambassador called on the Minister to formally congratulate him on his appointment and to discuss ways to further enhance bilateral cooperation, particularly in the area of defence and security.
The Minister expressed his appreciation for Egypt’s continued friendship and noted that both countries stand to benefit significantly from closer collaboration between their respective armed forces. He underscored the importance of joint efforts in addressing contemporary global security challenges, particularly the threat of violent extremism.
Dr Omane Boamah further recognised Egypt’s pivotal role within the Arab world and its influence on global political affairs. He assured the Ambassador of Ghana’s commitment to strengthening defence ties through military engagements and shared development initiatives.
In response, HE A.M Youssef expressed Egypt’s readiness to support Ghana in building its defence capacity. He noted that Egypt and Ghana share common values and military priorities, and that Egypt is keen on supporting Ghana in areas such as military-industrial development and training.
The Ambassador revealed Egypt’s intention to assist Ghana in establishing factories for the assembly of armoured vehicles, and to supply Ghana with armoured military equipment as part of broader defence cooperation initiatives.
On training, H.E Youssef indicated that Egypt is ready to provide specialised capacity-building opportunities for Ghanaian military engineers, especially personnel from the 48 Engineer Regiment, given Ghana’s significant leadership role in West Africa. He also highlighted plans to support Ghana with training programmes in engineering, healthcare, and other relevant sectors.
The Ambassador referenced Egypt’s successful implementation of job-creation farms in Nigeria and expressed his government’s willingness to replicate similar projects in Ghana to support the Ghana Armed Forces in improving livelihoods and community engagement.
He concluded by thanking the Minister and the senior leadership of the Ministry of Defence for their warm reception and reaffirmed Egypt’s dedication to strengthening the long-standing partnership with Ghana.
