The Czech Republic Ambassador to Ghana, HE Pavel Bilek, paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Defence, Hon Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, at The Square. The visit served as an opportunity to officially congratulate the Minister on his appointment, reinforce the strong diplomatic and defence cooperation between the two countries, and discuss emerging security challenges along Ghana’s borders and potential areas of support.

Welcoming the Ambassador, Hon Dr Omane Boamah reflected on the historic and enduring relations between Ghana and the Czech Republic, which he noted date back to the pre-independence era. He commended the Czech Republic for its leadership in the manufacturing of aircraft, defence equipment, and weaponry, and acknowledged the significant contributions it has made toward enhancing the operational readiness of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

The Minister highlighted key threats facing Ghana’s national security, including illegal mining, terrorism, and violent extremism, and underscored the need for increased international collaboration in confronting them. He appealed for enhanced support from the Czech Republic in the form of modern technological equipment, specialised vehicles, and intelligence-sharing mechanisms to help Ghana secure its borders and contribute to regional stability.

Hon Omane Boamah advocated for the expansion of training opportunities and military scholarships for GAF personnel in Czech military institutions. He emphasised that capacity-building remains a cornerstone of Ghana’s defence priorities and expressed gratitude for the Czech Republic’s continued support in that regard.

In response, HE Pavel Bilek reaffirmed his government’s readiness to strengthen cooperation with Ghana, particularly in the areas of defence, security technology, and strategic training. He recognised Ghana’s key role in regional peace and stability and expressed optimism about the deepening of bilateral ties, especially through sustained engagements between their respective armed forces.

The Ambassador further noted that the Czech Republic remains committed to supporting Ghana in addressing both current and emerging security threats and looked forward to building on the existing momentum for even greater cooperation in the years ahead.
