The Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC), has officially launched activities to mark its 50th anniversary at Hamidu Hall in Teshie. The momentous occasion commenced with a welcome address by the Commandant of GAFCSC, Major General Jackson Wonje Esq, who ushered in a series of reflections on the institution’s enduring legacy and future trajectory.

‎In a fraternal message, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, noted that the College’s milestone comes at a critical juncture, as the West African sub-region and the wider Sahel continue to grapple with complex, multidimensional and highly volatile security challenges. He emphasised that in an era marked by asymmetric threats, violent extremism and increasingly sophisticated vulnerabilities, the role of GAFCSC in promoting regional stability has become even more vital.

‎The President commended the College for its remarkable ability to adapt to changing times, a trait most clearly reflected in the dynamic evolution of its curriculum over the years. Reaffirming the Government’s unwavering support, he pledged continued commitment to providing GAFCSC with the necessary infrastructure, resources and institutional backing required to maintain its enviable status as a global centre of excellence in professional military education. He expressed the hope that the College’s next chapter would bring even greater honour to Ghana and the African continent.

‎Delivering the keynote address under the theme, “Celebrating 50 Years of Excellence in Professional Military Education,” the Chief of Staff at the Presidency, Hon Julius Debrah, described GAFCSC as a premier incubator of leadership where strong minds are nurtured and equipped with the intellectual grounding required to navigate an increasingly complex global environment. He noted that one of the institution’s greatest achievements over the years has been its seamless integration of rigorous military training with academic excellence.

‎Hon Debrah stated that this unique approach has fostered significant intellectual growth among both local and international military officers, thereby cementing GAFCSC’s reputation as a leading centre of excellence in professional military education.

‎ To officially launch the Golden Jubilee celebrations, the Chief of Staff participated in a symbolic tree-planting exercise and performed the sod-cutting ceremony for the landmark anniversary project. He also inspected a guard of honour alongside the Deputy Minister for Defence, Hon Ernest Brogya Genfi and later toured a photo exhibition showcasing the College’s history, past Commandants and notable memorabilia.

‎The event was further enlivened by vibrant cultural performances and the ceremonial cutting of the anniversary cake.

‎The launch brought together high-ranking dignitaries including the Chief Director of the Ministry, Mr Emmanuel Kartey, past Commandants, military officials and members of the academic community to celebrate the College’s rich heritage while charting a strategic path for its future. Other activities earmarked for the anniversary celebrations include a public lecture, a health walk and fun games, a graduation dinner and a thanksgiving service.
