The Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces and President of the Republic, H E John Dramani Mahama, has officially presented a comprehensive government-backed welfare and compensation package to the surviving children and dependants of Ghana’s fallen 8 heroes who lost their lives in the military helicopter crash at Adansi Akrofuom District in the Ashanti Region on 6th August 2025.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony at the Jubilee House, President Mahama underscored the nation’s moral responsibility to care for the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to Ghana. He stated that although no financial package could replace the love and guidance of a parent, the country remains committed to ensuring that the children of the fallen heroes are supported throughout their lives.
The President disclosed that he had personally written letters to each of the children, assuring them that the sacrifice and service of their parents would never be forgotten and would continue to inspire future generations. He encouraged them to pursue excellence and uphold the values of patriotism, integrity and selfless service exemplified by their parents.
As part of the support package, President Mahama announced the establishment of a GH¢1 million trust fund for every minor child of the fallen heroes to secure their academic futures. He also revealed that a total compensation package of GH¢13,872,962.40 had been awarded to the dependants of the four civilian officials who died in the crash in line with the Workmanship Compensation Act, while the families of the deceased military personnel had also formally received their compensation packages per Military Regulations.
The President expressed profound appreciation to corporate organisations and individuals whose generous contributions helped make the long-term support initiative possible, noting that their partnership had enabled Government to fulfil its commitment to stand with the bereaved families beyond the period of national mourning.
Each family received a Personalised Legacy Box containing investment certificates, commemorative medallion of their fallen loved one, other keepsakes and a personalised letter from the President. The package also includes full educational support through the GETFund Scholarship Scheme, comprehensive healthcare coverage under the Premier Nationwide Health Insurance valued at 3million annually for each dependant granting them access to topnotch healthcare facilities across the country to cater for critical and emergency healthcare needs.
Present at the ceremony were senior government officials, the Deputy Minister for Defence, Hon Ernest Brogya Genfi, the Chief Director of the Ministry , Mr Emmanuel Kartey, the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, Service Chiefs, staff of the Ministry, spouses and children of the fallen heroes, as well as representatives of the bereaved families. The families expressed gratitude for the support, describing the initiative as a source of relief and renewed hope.
The national compensation initiative reflects Government’s unwavering commitment to honouring the memory of the public servants and military personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty while ensuring that their dependants receive sustained care, protection and opportunities for a brighter future.
