President Mahama Directs Activation of Zoomlion Transfer Stations to Improve Post-Flood Waste Collection

The President of the Republic and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama joined the military, other security services, residents, Zoomlion and local officials in Alajo, Accra for the second day of the nationwide cleanup exercise aimed at tackling waste management crisis and mitigating flood risks threatening the flood-prone community.

President Mahama commended the public for their massive participation in the national clean up exercise. He however appealed to those who were yet to involve themselves in the exercise to get involved by cleaning their respective neighbourhoods.

He added that the focus of the second day of the exercise was to get the debris from the gutters into the big trucks to the dump sites. During the exercise, President Mahama announced that six long-awaited transfer stations which were built about nine years ago and not in use will now be opened by Zoomlion, making it much easier for tricycles “aboboyas” and smaller garbage trucks to offload waste efficiently.

The ongoing exercise is focused on clearing refuse, desilting choked drains to mitigate flood risks and foster a cleaner, safer and healthier environment.

Senior government officials, including the Local Government Minister and Religious Affairs, Hon Ahmed Ibrahim, the Deputy Defence Minister, Hon Ernest Brogya Genfi, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, the Service Commanders and the Chief of Staff at the General Headquarters, the Comptroller General of Immigration, Mr Samuel Basintale Amadu and the Director General of Prisons, Mrs Patience Baffoe-Bonnie Esq.

The exercise was expected to enter day three with all the security services on board to ensure all the debris have been collected .
