The United States Assistant Secretary of War for International Security Affairs at the Office of the Undersecretary of War for Policy, Mr Daniel Zimmerman, and his delegation have paid a working visit to the Ministry of Defence to strengthen bilateral relations and deepen defence cooperation between Ghana and the United States. During the visit, the delegation met with the Deputy Minister for Defence, Hon Ernest Brogya Genfi, to discuss areas of mutual interest, including joint military exercises, intelligence sharing and support for Ghana’s efforts to combat terrorism and other emerging security threats in the region.
Welcoming the delegation, Hon Brogya Genfi expressed appreciation for the United States’ longstanding partnership with Ghana and its continued support for regional peace and stability. He commended the logistical assistance, military training and maritime security support provided by the United States, describing them as vital to enhancing Ghana’s defence capabilities. He reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the United States to address the growing security challenges in West Africa, particularly the deteriorating situation in the Sahel, which he said continues to pose a threat to Ghana’s national security.
Mr Zimmerman thanked the Deputy Minister for the warm reception and reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to expanding its defence partnership with Ghana. He announced plans for the two countries to collaborate on the use of drone technology to enhance intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations. He also disclosed that, following the establishment of a United States Drone Academy in Morocco, Ghana is expected to become the next beneficiary of the programme. According to him, the initiative will contribute to strengthening surveillance capabilities and improving border security.
Mr Zimmerman further conveyed his condolences to the Ministry following the passing of the late Minister for Defence and acknowledged the first anniversary of the military helicopter crash. Among those present at the meeting were; the Ministry’s Chief Director, Mr Emmanuel Kartey, some directors of the Ministry and the Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy, Mr Rolf Olson.
